2002 Annual Meeting
& President's Report

President's Report, MaryDee Sist, DVM: The Heart pathology study with Dr. Bell has been completed. Requests for forwarding Saluki hearts for inclusion into the study have been rejected since Dr. Bell has retired and moved to Arizona. 100 Saluki hearts were examined. Numerous revisions have been done on the paper describing the hemangiosarcoma incidence with the hope of having it ready for submission to the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation in June. An additional paper describing the non-cancerous heart pathology findings will be written in the fall.

Approximately 20 cancer samples have been histologically examined and characterized by Dr. Steficek. Tissue blocks have been saved for future DNA analysis. I am continuing to request submission of samples so a tumor and pedigree registry documenting the incidence of various types of cancers in Salukis can be further elucidated.

Partially through my attendance at the AKC/CHF Cancer Symposium and the submission of SHR's Saluki health survey results, the CHF has finally included our desire to further investigate the incidence of hemangiosarcoma in Salukis in their Request for Research Pre-Proposals 2003-2004. This should allow researchers with interest in this form of cancer to become aware of our concern and ability to contribute to the funding of pertinent grants.

A grant has been made to Terri King, Ph.D., Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Medical Genetics, University of Texas - Houston Medical School. She will conduct a genetic and epidemiologic pedigree analysis concerning the incidence of hemangiosarcoma and other diseases in the select population of Salukis included in the Heart Pathology Study. She is also assisting in creating a survey to help address the potential environmental and/or genetic components of this incidence in Salukis.

A $2,500.00 donation has been made to the AKC Canine Health Foundation SHR Donor Advisory Fund in memory of Marie Adams. This contribution was made possible by the generous donations from many Saluki fanciers in memory of Marie Adams and will be used to further investigations into Saluki health issues.

SHR has approved the funding of AKC/CHF Grant No. 2657: Role of Circulating Endothelial Progenitor Cells in Physiologic and Pathologic Angiogenesis in Dogs by Steven Dow, DVM, Ph.D; Colorado State University - $2000 over 2 years will be withdrawn from the CHF/SHR Donor Advisory Fund. Hemangiosarcomas can't grow without angiogenesis and this study might benefit Salukis.

A series of three Saluki heart articles have been published in an Italian publication, The Baraka Book. These articles are also available for viewing on the SHR web site.

SHR, Inc. corporate records and accounting records will be available for examination at the SCOA 2003 National Specialty at our booth in the tobacco barn. Information about SHR projects and copies of all articles will also be available to Saluki fanciers.

Treasurers Report, James Steckley: As of May 8, 2003, Saluki Health Research has assets of $39,526.07, Profit and Loss May 15, 2002 through May 6, 2003

Secretaries Report, Nancy Badra: Five generation pedigrees of all the Salukis which participated in the thyroid study, heart study and heart pathology study have been entered into a pedigree program (CompuPed). This is a tremendous resource that will be of assistance in the genetic and epidemologic pedigree analysis of the cancer and heart disease incidence in Salukis.

SHR, Inc. has established an independent website at http://salukihealthresearch.tripod.com. The site is routinely updated with donor acknowledgements, information about current projects, fundraising activities and updates on our investigations of Saluki health concerns.
